Communication as an academic field relates to all the
ways we communicate, so it embraces a large body of
knowledge. The information relates to both verbal and
nonverbal messages. We use oral communication more so
then any other form of communication to connect with
people. We use it in just about every aspect of our
lives, so its not surprise that communications is a
widely offered curriculum at most colleges and universities.
You will find a communications degree useful in a variety
of fields such as journalism, advertising, public relations
and the arts. Many people also find it useful in the
business world as well, since communications majors
are required to learn public speaking, it can also increase
your interpersonal skills at work.
Communications is also an alternative to getting an
English degree, since it has practical application in
the business world. BAs in communication are not as
specific as gradate level degrees. Each school generally
specializes in one or perhaps several areas of study
under the broad umbrella of the communication field.
The areas of study available to students include an
interesting array of possible choices. Graduate level
courses allows students to specialize in a field.
